Prasanna: I am now at Endamturutti Mana (house). It was ruled by a Vaikom, a Naboothiri (high caste Brahmin) who had the authority of the Vaikom temple. The Ezhuva and other lower castes had no right to travel through the paths surrounding the Vaikom Shiva temple. The house of a Naboothiri family, who believed that even the touch of the shadows of low castes would make them impure, has now been bought by AITUC and is made into a Labour Union office. The Jatha has reached this courtyard.
Even Mahatma Gandhi was not allowed to enter the mana as he belonged to a lower caste. The great social reformers Sri Narayana Guru, EV Ramasamy Naikkar alias Periyar, and others fought for freedom of movement through this route. Kabir, Ravidas and Guru Nanak also inspired this struggle. We must work to oppose caste discriminations and strive to provide equal status to everyone in society.
प्रसन्ना: मैं अभी एंडमटुरुट्टी मना (घर) में बैठा हूं। इस पर एक वाइकोम, एक नम्बूदरी (उच्च जाति के ब्राह्मण) का शासन था, जिसके पास वाइकोम मंदिर का अधिकार था। एझुवा और अन्य निचली जातियों को वैकोम शिव मंदिर के आसपास के रास्तों से गुजरने का अधिकार नहीं था। एक नम्बूदरी परिवार के इस घर को, जो मानते थे कि निचली जातियों की छाया के स्पर्श मात्र से वे अपवित्र हो जायेंगे – अब AITUC ने खरीद लिया है और इसे श्रमिक संघ के कार्यालय बना दिया है। इसी प्रांगण में इस वक्त जत्था पहुंचा हुआ है।
यहां तक कि महात्मा गांधी को भी इस घर में प्रवेश करने की अनुमति नहीं थी क्योंकि वे निचली जाति के थे। महान समाज सुधारक श्री नारायण गुरु, रामासामी नाइकर ‘पेरियार’ और अन्य लोगों ने इस मार्ग से आवाजाही की स्वतंत्रता के लिए लड़ाई लड़ी। कबीर, रविदास और गुरु नानक ने भी इस संघर्ष को प्रेरित किया। हमें इन जातिगत भेदभावों का विरोध करने के लिए काम करना चाहिए और समाज में सभी को समान दर्जा प्रदान करने का प्रयास करना चाहिए।
