Dhai Akhar Prem’ Cultural Jatha in Jharkhand Wove a Multicolored Fabric

The journey of ‘Dhai Akhar Prem’ National Cultural Padyatra in the ninth state of Jharkhand was a wonderful example of tribal culture and dialogue, dancing with melodious rhythms and rhythmic dances and mingling with each other. Not only many female friends participated in it, but many child artists and school children also participated in the performances with full enthusiasm. During the Padyatra, many elderly comrades were also walking from village to village giving public speeches and also dancing with full enthusiasm. A yatra cultural exchange was started at the beginning of the ‘Dhai Akhar Prem’ Padayatra. In this exchange all barriers of formalities were broken. Here the Padyatris did not come just to give the message or show their plays but they were also learning the style of singing, playing, dancing and walking from the local children, women and elders and were getting involved in their lives. With beaming faces, all the padyatris were mingling with the local people of all ages and dancing and singing in such a way that the message of love was creating a stir in everyone’s hearts.

The jatha of ‘Dhai Akhar Prem’ in Jharkhand state against lies, hatred and violence started on 8th December from the workplace of popular novelist Vibhuti Bhushan Bandopadhyay. ‘Purvarang’ program was organized on its eve. This program was organized by ‘Dhai Akhar Prem Padyatra Organizing Committee’ at the Taradas stage of Gauri Kunj in Ghatshila. Despite the rain, the enthusiasm of the friends remained intact in Ghatshila.

The Purvarang program started with garlanding the statue of Vibhuti Bhushan Bandopadhyay. Provincial President of Science for Society Jharkhand Dr Ali Imam Khan, General Secretary Dr D N S Anand, Gauri Kunj President Tapas Chatterjee, District President of Janwadi Writers Association Jamshedpur Ashok Shubhadarshi, Shashi Kumar of Progressive Writers Association, Nisar Ali, member of Chhattisgarh IPTA and National Secretary Shailendra Kumar organised it collectively. On this occasion, Dr. Ali Imam Khan said that Jharkhand has been a land of struggle for equality. The same message will reach out through this journey. We will break the boundary of ‘we and they’. This is not a matter of one or two people but of all of us. Our journey will talk about equal rights and freedom for all people.

After the inaugural program, the artists present on the stage presented performances. The song “Pother Ebar Namo Sathi” written by Salil Chaudhary for IPTA was sung, which was presented by the adolescent girls and children living around Gauri Kunj located in Dahigora. Sweety Barik, Sanjana Mandal, Riya Mandal, Babita Pradhan, Shubhashish Mandal were the performers and the dance was taught by Ghatshila IPTA’s Jyoti Mallik. Apart from this, the song ‘Dhai Akhar Prem’, Santhali song and the play ‘Dhai Akhar Prem’ in Chhattisgarhi dance style were performed.

On this occasion, Padmashree Madhu Mansuri sang ‘Gaon Chhodb Nahin’ and described love as essential for life. Popular storyteller Ranendra said that in the present times, there is a need to love not only humans but also all the animals and plants, only then can our lives become happy. General Secretary of Progressive Writers Association, Mithilesh Singh and other colleagues also expressed their solidarity with the organizing committee. On this occasion, Padma Shri Madhu Mansoori Hansmukh, director of Tribal Research Institute with the organising committee honored the storyteller Ranendra, painter Bharti, General Secretary of Jharkhand Press Mithilesh, documentary film maker Biju Toppo, Dr. Ali Imam Khan, Dr. D.N.S. Anand, Ashok Shubhadarshi with gamcha, the symbol of love and labor. Litti Chokha was prepared for dinner before the ‘Dhai Akhar Prem’ Padyatra and served by family members of IPTA Ghatshila President Ganesh Murmu.

08 December 2023 Friday

‘Dhai Akhar Prem’ Padyatra started from 8 December 2023. The Padyatra was started with the presentation of Nisar Ali from Chhattisgarh from the Basuki stage of Maubhandar ICC Mazdoor Union Office. The caravan moved ahead with the folk song sang by Palamu IPTA. Many people including Com Omprakash Singh, Birendra Singhdev, Mahmood Ali, Sushant Seet, Ravi Prakash Singh, Com Vikram Kumar participated in the beginning of the journey and walked along till the next stop.

The first stop was at Chunudih Dharambahal. Mukhiya Banav Murmu and Majhi Mukesh Murmu with others welcomed the artists. Padmashree Madhu Mansuri sang a song. The villagers along with the colleagues of Ghatshila IPTA performed dances by playing Dhamsa-Tumda and folk songs. The villagers also walked along till the next stop. In the yatra, under the leadership of Progressive Writers Association Jharkhand President Ranendra, General Secretary Mithilesh Singh, Padmashree Madhu Mansuri, Chhattisgarhi dance artist Nisar Ali, Devnarayan Sahu, Jagnu Ram, Harsh Sen, Biju Toppo with camera and artists of Daltonganj IPTA performed songs and music while walking together.

Via Edelbeda village the group reached Jhaprishol village in the afternoon. Here the villagers welcomed them traditionally under the leadership of Majhi Pitamber ji of the village. Madhu Mansuri enthralled everyone by singing ‘Jharkhand ka kora’. Also, Sing Singraya, Sundar Hembram, Budhan Soren sang Sendra song and women performed Santhali dance. These were the villagers of Jhaprishol village, who after seeing the influx of yatra and the song and dance, reached the school and said that they also have to sing the song. Both the artists, aged around 50-52, started getting ready – one to play the Kendari, the other wearing a saree, fake nose ring and hair braid. When they brought him to the Akhara, he sang a song. After the song, Madhu Mansuri got up and spoke to them and expressed concern over the disinterest among the youth towards tribal musical instruments. Artists of Ghatshila IPTA sang Santhali song ‘Bereid Mese Ho…’. In the village school, Nisar Ali’s dance troupe gave a captivating presentation of ‘Chidiya Aur Shikari’ in front of the children. Local folk artists of the village sang traditional songs. Urmila Hansda sang a beautiful song. The group was provided food in the village.

After this the padyatra reached Hendaljudi via Bankati. Here cultural programs were presented among and with the local residents. From Hendaljudi the march reached Kalajhor, where cultural programs was organised in the night. After having dinner, the jatha rested for the night in a school. In this, local resident Fudan Soren presented a traditional Santhali song while playing the violin. Also Nisar Ali, Devnarayan Sahu, Jaganu Ram Dhruv and Harsh Sen presented drama in Chhattisgarhi dance style.

In the first day’s march, Pankaj Srivastava, Prem Prakash, Bhola, Sanju, Shashi, Anubhav, Ravi, Snehaj Mallik, Jyoti Mallik, Ganesh Murmu, Shekhar Mallik, Urmila Hansda, Ramchandra Mardi, Dr. Devdoot Soren, Shashi Kumar, Ankur, Arpita, Upendra Mishra, Shailendra Kumar, Mridula Mishra, Ahmed Badr, Ashok Shubhadarshi, Ranendra, Mithilesh, Dr. Ali Imam Khan, Geeta, Mallika, Manav (Pavitro), Arvind Anjum and Rakesh were present.

09 December 2023 Saturday

The journey of the second day of ‘Dhai Akhar Prem’ Padyatra started at 8 am from Kalajhor School. At 9:30 the yatra reached Rajabasa, where Dulal Chandra Hansda, Siddho Murmu welcomed the group. He was honored by giving ‘Dhai Akhar Prem Gamchha’. During the British times, the king of the village did not go to the British to pay taxes, rather the British officers themselves used to come and stay here for a few days and move ahead, hence the name of this village was Rajabasa. The padyatris, singing and dancing on the streets of Rajabasa, reached Rajabasa Akhara, where a cultural program was organised. The program started with the song ‘Dhai Akhar Prem Re Sadho’ by the young artists of Jamshedpur IPTA. After this, a play named ‘Dhai Akhar Prem’ was presented by the artists of Chhattisgarh IPTA under the leadership of Nisar Ali. After the play, a song for unity, equality and peace was presented by the artists of Palamu IPTA.

Amidst the programme, Siddaram Murmu, Dulal Hadassa and Mangal Murmu were honored by giving a Gamchha, a symbol of love and labour. Santhali songs were presented by Ghatshila IPTA. Local tribal women Somwari Hembram, Raimani Tudu and Champa Murmu presented traditional Santhali songs. Through his song, he reflected his immense love for his parents and said that the parents who gave birth to us, today when the time came to serve them, they left all of us and went away. Rural women danced enthusiastically with the padyatris of ‘Dhai Akhar Prem’ Yatra.

At the end of the program, Shailendra Kumar addressed the villagers and said that today there is an atmosphere of violence in the entire world. People in power want to maintain their dominance by creating divisions among the masses. Society needs love today. We are sharing the message of love in our songs. Our songs are songs of love, songs of food against hunger. Shailendra further said that people with hatred first kill the human inside them and then kill others. Shekhar Malik conducted the program. Though all people in this village were Bengali speaking, there was no language problem due to the language of love.

Along with a number of cultural workers, Dr. Ali Imam Khan, DS Anand, future generation editor Om Prakash Singh, Ravindra Choubey, Ahmed Badr, Anjana, Sahendra who came from Raigarh accompanied the yatra. Jamshedpur IPTA’s team was especially the center of attraction during the second day’s yatra. The children’s team included Roshni, Varsha, Sujal, Karan. While talking to the villagers of Rajabasa during the cultural program we got to know that two languages are spoken in this village, first is Santhali and second is Bengali.

After the conversation, yatra reached Vrindavanpuri Chowk singing and dancing. After the presentation of songs, AISF Chakulia’s comrades Sarkar Kisku and Jyoti interacted with the villagers in Bengali. After having breakfast there and drinking Sattu, the journey proceeded. The yatra reached Khadiadih at 1 pm. As soon as we reached Khadiyadih village, we saw that decorated chairs were arranged in a field. The people participating in the padyatra were welcomed by the Veenapani Club in this ground. A house was seen in that field. That house was the office of Veenapani Club. A cultural program of the artists participating in the march of ‘Dhai Akhar Prem’ was organized by Veenapani Club in the grounds. Here Nikhil Mahato and Shivnath Singh welcomed the yatris. Bharti, Mamta, Jhuma and Janaki, students studying music here, presented welcome songs. The artists of Little IPTA Jamshedpur presented the song ‘Dhai Akshar Prem’ and then sang “Dara Diri Da” along with the child artists of Ghatshila.

Nisar Ali along with his team comprising Devnarayan Sahu, Jugnu Ram, Harsh Sen presented an energetic ‘Damadam Mast Qalandar’ song with dance. After the presentation of the song, ‘Chalak Shikari’ Gammat was performed in Nacha theater style under the direction of Nisar Ali. Also the villagers were told about Nacha Gammat folk art. Dulal Chandra Hansda ji gave information about the place. Parvez Alam and Ali Imam Khan also addressed the gathering. Discussing the objectives of the visit, Ali Imam Khan said that at present the whole world is going through a period of violence. In this era of violence, our life is surrounded by problems, in such a situation, this journey is necessary. Shekhar Mallik addressed the villagers in Bengali and informed them about the yatra.

At the end of the program, Prabhat Khabar journalist Mohammad Parvez was honored by the yatris by presenting him with a Gamchha, a symbol of love and labour. On this occasion, Mohammad Parvez said that such initiative is necessary to take the dialogue of love to every village. After this Manoranjan Mahato presented Jhumar in Bengali language. After the conclusion of the cultural program, the people participating in the padayatra were sent off after being served food by the Veenapani Club. After conversation it was revealed that Veenapani Club was about 100 years old club of that village. Shivnath Singh devotes his entire time to this club and teaches classical music to children. Shivnath Singh is not only a teacher of classical music but also a farmer. Nikhil Ranjan Mahato along with Shivnath Singh and the villagers look after the club.

Singing and dancing, the journey of ‘Dhai Akhar Prem’ reached Badbil village from Khadiyadih village on the invitation of local resident Tapas ji. Dialogue was established with the villagers by organizing a cultural program by the pedestrians near the Hari Mandir of Badbil. At the beginning of the program, Ahmed Badr said that one can make atom bomb by reading pothi, but cannot love. Love starts from your home and your surroundings. Love needs to be learned and taught. Knowledge is incomplete without love. Only the knowledge which includes love can talk about human security. Jyoti Mallik explained the purpose of the visit in Bengali. Jyoti also interacted with the rural women, who shared their sorrows and pain. Jyoti also requested the villagers to accompany her till the next stop, which they agreed to.

After this, a Gammat named ‘Afvaah’ was presented in the cultural program under the leadership of Nisar Ali. After Gammat, a collective song for unity, equality and peace was presented. Vikas Bhagat thanked the group. The programs presented by the yatris were greatly appreciated by the local people and they also provided financial support for further journey. After this the yatra of ‘Dhai Akhar Prem’ left for Galudih. It reached the zonal ground of Galudih at 6 pm, where a cultural program was organised. Here the children of Little IPTA Jamshedpur started the program by singing ‘Padhke Hum To Inquilab Laayenge’. After that the song ‘Dhaai Akhar Prem Ke Padhle Zara, Dosti Ka Ehtram Kar Lain Zara’ was presented. Dancers also performed. After the presentation of the cultural programme, the audience suggested the yatris to do the program in the morning also. After this the group took rest.

The group included Arpita, Prashant Srivastava, Upendra, Shailendra, Bhola, Sanju, Ravi, Shashi, Anubhav, Biju Toppo, DNS Anand, Ahmed Badr, Anjana, Varsha, Sujal, Karan, Roshni, Sayendra, Ravindra Chaubey, Ankur, Shadab, Heera Manikpuri, Dr. Shamim, Mridula Mishra, Prof. B N Prasad, Prabhat Khabar representative Parvez Alam, Mallika, Snehaj, Geeta, Manav, Manoranjan Mahato, Sarkar Kisku, Dulal Chandra Hansda, DD Lohra, Jyoti Mallick, Shekhar Mallick, Bareilly’s friends Gargi Singh and Anjana also joined the group that day. A large number of rural women, children and other people were present.

10th December 2023 Sunday

The group of ‘Dhai Akhar Prem’ Padyatra moved ahead from the previous stop Mahulia on the third day of Jharkhand leg. At Subhash Chowk, Galudih Bazaar, the artists of the Yatra sang folk songs in front of the people present and gave the message of the Yatra. Folk dance was presented by dance artists in Baraj Colony. Jyoti explained the purpose of the visit in Bengali and Prem Prakash did in Hindi. The group, singing folk songs with enthusiasm while passing through Baraj, reached Kedar Bhawan in Rakha Mines via Digdi. Here Shashi Kumar gave information about the life of Comrade Kedar Das. He told that Kedar Babu’s lifetime earnings were two pairs of dhoti and vest. When he died, there was a queue of people for ten kilometers for his last journey. He said that if there are tears, they should be of love, if there is teasing, then it should be of the beloved, not of discord. There the child artistes of Little IPTA sang the song ‘Padhke Hum To Inquilab Laayenge’. After this the group moved forward and reached Jadugoda Chowk. Here also child artistes presented folk songs.

The next stop was at Lugu Murmu Residential Tribal School in Bhatin village, where the school children and people associated with the school traditionally welcomed the cultural troupe. Lakhai Baske conducted the program. He welcomed the guest artistes and fed them Dumbu Pitha. Ramo Soren gave information about the school and introduced the founders and teachers of the school. After the meal, traditional dance was performed by playing Dhamsa (drum), in which traveling artistes also participated enthusiastically. Artists of IPTA Palamu started the cultural evening by singing ‘Bol Bhai Jharkhand’ at Lugu Murmu School. Children of Little IPTA presented the folk song ‘Dhai Akhar Prem Ke Padh Le Zara’. Artists of IPTA Ghatsila sang Santhali song ‘Aale Le Le Dishom’. After that the dance artists presented a folk drama. The play was followed by the screening of a film by renowned documentarian Biju Toppo.

A cultural evening was also organized in Bhatin village. Today some new yatris joined the journey, the main ones were story writer Kamal, Kripa Shankar, Janmat editor Sudhir Suman, Vinay, Shasikumar, poet Gauhar Aziz, Talha and Sanket of Nashik IPTA, Manorama, Sanjay Solomon, Prashant, Nora, Anjana, Shweta, Shashank, Sahendra, Gargi, Inzimaam, Farhan and some more artists of Little IPTA.

The fourth day’s Dhai Akhar Prem Padyatra started after breakfast from Lugu Murmu Residential School, Bhatin. Colleague Nisar Ali interacted with the school children. He showed off his make-up to the children. The curiosity of the children was palpable. Paltan Soren of Bhatin and Urmila of Hadtopa village participated in the yatra. The procession was moving forward on the way to Bhatin, spreading the message of love through songs. Meanwhile, Paltan Soren took all the yatris to his home and made them meet his family members. On the request of the yatris, Urmila sang a song in Santhali language and Paltan Soren accompanied. The song reflected the farmers’ joy at the first rain and love for nature. Also, when the first rain falls, the peacock also starts dancing after seeing the black cloud. It shows the love of all living beings for the first rain. Showing love towards the family of Paltan Soren, the padyatra moved ahead and after walking about one and a half kilometer the march reached Neemdih village.

Here the artists started the program with the presentation of Jharkhand song ‘Bol Re Bhai Jharkhandi Bolo’. In the program, a song in Chhattisgarhi style was presented under the leadership of Nisar Ali. In the end, Cheetamuni Hembram of Neemdih presented a Santhali song. Through the song he said that no matter how much you study, do not leave farming. After this the yatra left for Jharia village. After dancing, singing and distributing leaflets in Jharia village, the procession moved ahead and reached Rajdoha village. A cultural program was presented by the pedestrians in the upgraded middle school campus of this village. In the cultural programme, dance was presented by the school students, which was greatly appreciated by the pedestrians. After this, a play named ‘Dhai Akhar Prem’ was presented in dance theater style by the artists of Chhattisgarh under the direction of Nisar Ali. Sanket, a friend from Nashik in the school, facilitated an activity of clapping in just one and a half minutes, which the children enjoyed.

Children and teachers thoroughly enjoyed the play. Before the cultural program, short films were shown among the children in this school. At the end of the cultural program, filmmaker Biju Toppo explained in detail about the film shown among the children. He said that there are messages of love hidden in all the films. Creating any good thing is not possible without love. You saw in the film that the Earth was created by all the aquatic creatures together. Ankur conducted the program in an interesting and conversational style. Bareilly’s friend Gargi helped Ankur in showing the film.

After this, the yatris toured Rajdoha village while dancing and singing and continued moving forward while distributing leaflets. After that the pedestrians reached the house of flute player Durga Prasad Murmu, who was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. Reached his house and talked to him. He described love as important for the betterment of life. Also recited a poem called Dulad in Santhali. A song was presented under the leadership of Nisar Ali, an expert in Nacha style theater who accompanied the pedestrians. After this, a program was presented by the pedestrians at the picnic place on the banks of river Narva. Pedestrians enjoyed food on the river bank. After this, the procession left for Hadtopa while dancing and singing. On the way, after crossing Narva Bridge, the Yatra reached Hadtopa village, presenting songs at Basanti Chowk, Murgaghutu. As soon as they reached this village, the pilgrims were given a grand welcome under the leadership of Ramchandra Mardi and Urmila Hansda. Talha and Sanket of Nashik IPTA were also included in this yatra.

Tuesday 12th December 2023

The fifth day of ‘Dhai Akhar Prem’ padayatra started from Hadtopa village. While dancing, singing and remembering the martyred ancestors through songs, the procession reached the primary school of the village. A cultural program was organized among the children. At the beginning of the program, the school children welcomed the pilgrims with a very melodious welcome song. After this the children presented a play. The importance of education was explained through drama. The program in the school was coordinated by Urmila Hasda and Ramchandra Mardi.

After the program the procession proceeded with dancing and singing. Chaibasa’s companions joined the journey midway. In this way people kept joining the caravan and the journey continued. After a journey of about four kilometres, the yatris reached Domjudi, where on behalf of the pedestrians, filmmaker Tarun Mohammad honored Pargana Haripado Murmu by presenting him a Gamchha, a symbol of love and labour. On this occasion, Pargana Haripado Murmu extended best wishes to all the pedestrians and said, “You all are sharing love, this is the biggest thing.” After this Urmila and Ramchandra collectively presented a Santhali song. Through the song he said that the mountains and hills are decorated with flowers and leaves. Rivers and waterfalls are adorned with flowing water. We will decorate ourselves with flowers and enjoy fruits. We will support each other in times of sorrow. Will give the message of love to the coming generation.

Taking the program forward, Parvez Alam presented a song in ‘Ho’ language. He explained the life of Birsa Munda and his struggles in detail through songs. He also reflected on Birsa’s dedication towards water, forest and land. He sacrificed his life for the sake of water, forest, land and freedom. Urmila conducted the program.

After this, the yatra reached Govindpur station while dancing, singing and distributing leaflets from Domjudi. There Sukhchandra Jha of Gandhi Peace Foundation, Com. Kedar Das’s grandson Ashok Kumar Lal Das, Ambuj Thakur, Kamat, Manikant, Rakesh and Vinay Kumar of Progressive Writers Association along with citizens of Govindpur welcomed the pedestrians. From here, Mukhtar Ahmed Khan of Human Welfare Trust joined his colleagues for the halt till evening and had lunch here. Before reaching the station, the pedestrians had to wait for about 25-30 minutes at Salgajhudi crossing, where some songs were sung and dialogues were held. During the brief stop at Barigoda on the way, Chaibasa IPTA, Daltonganj’s colleagues and Nisar Ali’s team demonstrated.

In the evening, the ‘Dhai Akhar Prem’ cultural march reached the Senior Citizens Committee at Premnagar in Gemco area, where the yatris had the night’s rest. Cultural programs took place at night in the premises of the Senior Citizens Committee, where Sanjay Solomon facilitated the programme. Pankaj Srivastava from Daltonganj and Talha from Nashik shared their travel experiences. Ahmed Badr highlighted the objective of the visit. Comrade Ramanuj Sharma of Senior Citizens Committee gave the vote of thanks and said that I am filled with energy after seeing the youth.

13 December 2023 Wednesday

On the morning of 13th, Jharkhand’s ‘Dhai Akhar Prem’ cultural march ended by paying homage to martyr Birsa Munda at the Birsa Memorial located at RD Tata roundabout, Sakchi from Senior Citizens Committee, Premnagar. On the way, a song was presented by the children of Little IPTA at the TRF gate and also at the tea kiosk thereafter. Children were also walking on the road singing. In this, not only was he singing the song ‘Dhai Akhar Prem’, but he had also learned the songs sung by his elder companions during the journey.

Brief description of Jharkhand Cultural Padyatra

This Padyatra, which was organised from 7th to 13th December, 2023 in Jharkhand, was hosted by various schools, social and cultural organizations. On the first day i.e. evening of 7 December, a cultural program was presented at Gauri Kunj, the residence of renowned litterateur Vibhuti Bhushan Bandopadhyay in Ghatshila and the padyatra was started, which went till Maubhandar. The group stayed there for the night. After this, on the first day on 8th December, the group passed through Chunudih, Dharambahal, Adelbera, Jhamprishal, Bankati, Hendaljudi and stopped at Kaljhor for the night halt of the first day. Night rest was at Galudih on the second day and Bhatin on the third day. On 11th December, the cultural troupe moved ahead and reached Dungridih at the place of Sangeet Natak Akademi Award-winning flute player Durga Prasad Murmu ji. On 11th the night halt took place at Urmila Hansda’s house in Hadtopa. On 12th December, the journey via Murgaghuttu via Domjudi, after having lunch at Govindpur in the afternoon, reached the Senior Citizens Committee located at Premnagar in Burmamines area in the evening. Here was the last night stop of the journey. On December 13, at 8 am, this cultural march from Premnagar reached Birsa Memorial in Sakchi, where it formally ended.

Apart from IPTA, Gandhi Peace Foundation, Janwadi Writers Association, Progressive Writers Association, cultural organization Gomhead, The Umbrella Creations, theater organization “Path”, Kala Mandir – Celluloid Chapter, etc. were involved in organising this Padyatra of ‘Dhai Akhar Prem’ in Jharkhand a success.
